Officials and players of the two state owned football clubs, Warri Wolves Football Club of Warri and Delta Queens Football Club of Asaba have received the backlog of salaries owed them by the clubs. The newly appointed Director General of the Delta State Sports Commission, Mr Festus Ohwodjero revealed this after the players got their monies yesterday. According to Ohwodjero the Governor Sheriff Oborevwori had ordered the immediate payment of all outstanding salaries of players and officials of the clubs after being briefed of the situation. The Director General said that the Governor had swiftly approved the payment of the six months salary and bonuses owed Warri Wolves players as well as the four months salary and bonuses owed Delta Queens players and officials. According to him, the salaries were paid directly into the players and officials' accounts unlike the usual procedure of paying the salaries into the account of the clubs who subsequently pay the players and official. Ohwodjero revealed that Governor Oborevwori had vowed never to allow such situation occur again as he had not been properly briefed of the situation until Thursday asserting that the welfare of the players was paramount to the state. It could be recalled that the players of Delta Queens had a meeting with the Director General on Thursday to register their predicament with the Director General assuring them that the Governor had already set in motion the payment of all their outstanding salaries. Delta Queens who are the defending champions of the Nigeria Women Football League had failed to replicate the heroics of last season on their way to winning the league and remain unbeaten the whole season. The team this season missed out of a Super Six place and would not be defending their title when the Super six holds later in the year.
